The Power of Being Cheered For by Monica Gelinas

When was the last time someone cheered for you?
How did it make you feel?
How did it change what came next?
I think back to my first marathon. Mile after mile, strangers lined the course with handmade signs, cowbells, and shouted encouragement: You've got this! Looking strong! Almost there! My own family and friends staked out two or three spots along the route, so just when my legs started to argue with me, I'd hear a familiar voice call my name out of the crowd. By the final stretch, the noise thickened into something almost physical — whistles, applause, people I had never met and would never see again, pulling for me like I was their own.
I crossed that finish line feeling seen, overjoyed, proud, celebrated, and completely energized, all at once. The feeling didn't end at the medal. For days afterward, I kept replaying it: the voices, the signs, the strangers who showed up for no reason except that someone was trying hard and needed a push. I found myself writing notes of gratitude to those who had stood along that course for me.
When the next race came, I noticed something had changed. I was stronger, yes, but also more confident — ready to face a harder course because I was carrying that memory with me. I used the power of being cheered for once to find the courage to try again.
What Cheering Really Gives Us
Cheering is not the same thing as praise. Praise usually arrives after the fact, once a result is in: you finished, you won, you got the diagnosis right. Cheering shows up in the middle of the struggle, before anyone knows how the story ends. It says: I see the effort you're putting in right now, and I believe you can keep going — no outcome required.
That is what makes it so powerful. Being cheered for tells you that you are not carrying the hard thing alone, even when you are the only one who can actually take the next step. It turns an invisible, solitary effort into something witnessed. And once something is witnessed, it becomes easier to keep doing — one more mile, one more hard day, one more appointment.
The effect lingers, too. A few minutes of being cheered for can fuel confidence that lasts for days, even for the next hard thing that comes along, long after the crowd has gone home.
A Different Kind of Care
Children with rare or undiagnosed conditions spend so much of their lives being evaluated, treated, tested, and discussed medically. Appointment after appointment, they are measured, scanned, and talked about in clinical terms — a case to be solved more often than a child to be known. Their families carry that weight alongside them: the waiting rooms, and unanswered questions, a slow grind of a diagnosis that may take years.
CC4C Dream Teams offer something these families rarely get: an experience that has nothing to do with being evaluated at all. A Dream Team is a small group of volunteers who show up, consistently, simply to cheer a child on — step by step, alongside whatever their journey looks like that week. There is no chart to improve, no test to pass. The cheering isn't tied to a milestone or a good scan result. It says the same thing the marathon crowd said to me: we see you, we're in your corner, keep going — whether this week is a hard one or an easy one.

The shift is enormous. For a family who is used to carrying the weight alone, it means someone else is standing on the course with them, cheering for no reason other than that they are trying, and that trying deserves to be seen.
The Power of Showing Up
You don't need a finish line or a bullhorn to cheer for someone. You just need to show up, notice the effort, and say so out loud. For a child and family navigating a rare or undiagnosed condition, that kind of presence has more power than we can imagine.
This fall, CC4C welcomed new Spotlight children and Dream Teams.
Dream Teams wrap communities of support around our children by welcoming them as honorary members of volunteer groups—ranging from high school teams to local organizations. Each child is matched based on shared interests, forming a two-year bond filled with joy, encouragement, and belonging. With adult leadership and support from CC4C staff, all interactions are supportive, group-based, and family-inclusive. This program embodies CC4C’s values and transforms isolation into connection, uplifting every child’s spirit and inspiring volunteers to lead with compassion and purpose.
Every child deserves to feel celebrated, included, and valued for who they are—not just defined by their medical journey. That’s the heart of CC4C’s Dream Teams program.
Be the cheer that carries a family forward
Every child navigating a rare or undiagnosed condition deserves to feel seen, valued, and cheered on—no matter what their week looks like. Your support makes these two-year Dream Team bonds possible, bringing joy and community right when it’s needed most.
